1. Shearing sheds

Do you have an old one you are looking to upgrade? Or are you thinking of starting from scratch and building a new one?

Either way there are lots of ideas being talked about and many producers are weighing up decisions that will have a lasting impact on their property and business. Having a well-designed shearing shed will help improve efficiency and shearer safety, therefore allowing you to get more wool off faster.

AWI and Dubbo shearing contractors have worked together to design a shearing shed that addresses worker safety and animal welfare considerations, while also achieving improved shed efficiency and good wool quality outcomes. For more information, click here.

Leading Sheep will be hosting a shearing shed design workshop in Longreach on Thursday 5 December.

3. LambEx 2020 – Young Guns competition

LambEx 2020 will be held in Melbourne on from 1-3 July and entry for the Young Guns competition is now open. The competition is aimed at bridging the city-country divide and increasing both awareness and communication of the ethical and sustainable methods of Australia’s sheep and lamb producers. This is essential for the industry’s strong future so LambEx wants to hear YOUR vision on how to connect the Australian sheep and lamb industry with city consumers.

Leading Sheep Project Leader, Andrea McKenzie was a finalist in the competition at the Perth LambEx in 2018 and describes the experience as one of the best she’s had, “Not only was the conference full of great ideas but the Young Guns experience built my communications skills, industry contacts and passion.”

4. Production Pointers Part 7: To feed or not to feed

To help answer this question, you need to know at least three prices:

  1. What are your store lambs worth now?
  2. How much is it going to cost me to get my store lambs to finished lambs?
  3. How much are my finished lambs going to be worth?

If price 3 minus price 2 is smaller than price 1, it may be more profitable for you to sell store lambs.
