1. Wild dog control update

awiIan Evans the Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) Program Manager for wild dog control updated Leading Sheep on:

  • Wild Dog Alert. This will provide real time messaging of the presence of a dog detected by property cameras. The prototype is presently 98% accurate in differentiating Dog/Not Dog. Wild Dog Alert will allow very targeted control and provide great intelligence on movements.  For more information click here.
  • The release of PAPP for fox and dog control in a commercial bait. PAPP is not a substitute for 1080 but is an additional tool. The antidote, Methylene Blue marketed as Blue Healer, is available from your veterinarian as an intravenous injection.  For more information on PAPP click here.
  • Brett Carlsson is the Queensland AWI Wild Dog Coordinator for the central and north-west region. His role is coordination and community engagement, for more information contact Brett on CarlssonB@agforceprojects.org.au.
  • If we want to make a difference to wild dog numbers we have to remove over 70% of the population each year. This requires widespread participation in control across all tenures.
  • Any Wild Dog Control group is eligible to apply for the limited AWI funding to assist in achieving their aims. For further details click here or contact Ian Evans ian.evans@wool.com or 0427 773 005.

2. Impacts of climate change on farmer work practices – survey

James Cook UniversityEmma Kassulke is conducting a research survey through James Cook University. They’re trying to reach Australian farmers across a variety of industries in order to gain an informed picture of farmer views about changing climate, and challenges this may pose to farming practices.

The survey is run online and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous and no individual will be personally identified in the dataset. The survey can be found at:  http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2133155/Impacts-of-climate-change-on-farmer-work-practices

This link directs to the survey information page, which contains further information about participation and the aims of the research. If you have any questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Emma (emma.kassulke@my.jcu.edu.au) or project supervisor Dr Connar McShane (connar.mcshane@jcu.edu.au or phone: 07 4781 6879).

3. The Innovator

AWI_MR_The_Innovator_HeroA new short film has been created to sell wool’s many messages of timelessness and versatility for a new generation.  The Innovator is a light-hearted animated video from The Woolmark Company that takes the viewer through the ages, offering a new perspective on how wool has played a crucial role in mankind’s evolution from the cave to the gym.

With no spoken word, this educational clip will be used across the world in many different markets, to educate children and consumers alike about how wool naturally keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter, can be worn for active and leisurewear and has endless opportunities for the creative mind.

4. Primary school resources

CaptureMany children grow up with little or no understanding of where their food and fibre originates from. Ask a child if they know where their breakfast cereal or toast came from and they are likely to name the supermarket their family uses. Ask them to think about where the food came from originally; before it got to the supermarket shelves, and you may well get a blank look.

Some books have been developed for use in the classroom to assist students to learn more about food and fibre and where it comes from. They are a colourful and interactive way of learning that encourage student engagement, and through language and images, aid learning.
