Storing and measuring soil carbon

PLEASE NOTE – due to some technical difficulties the webinar audio starts at around the 4 minute stage.

What is all the fuss about soil carbon? Did you know that carbon makes up more than 50 percent of soil organic matter? Which is a life blood of pasture productivity.

Carbon holds nutrients and releases them when pasture needs to grow, keeps the soil friable, improves soil productivity and retains the undesirable chemicals to break down safely. Soil carbon is also the largest store of carbon on land and the atmosphere. Therefore, it is an attractive option for sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. So there may be benefits for all, in encouraging the storing of carbon in soil.

Listen to Ram Dalal, Senior Principal Scientist at Department of Environment and Resource Management, speak about:

  • What is soil carbon?
  • What does carbon do in soil?
  • How does carbon cycle work and carbon become stored (sequestered) in the soil?
  • Can grazing increase or decrease soil carbon?
  • The challenges of measuring soil carbon
