| Leading Sheep has secured further funding from Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) to continue its work in targeting the adoption of new technologies and practices to increase the productivity and profitability of the Queensland sheep and wool industry.
The current three-year project is an initiative of AWI in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) and supported by AgForce and was due to conclude at the end of this year.
Leading Sheep Chair Denzil Mills said a two-day workshop in Roma on 21-22 November would identify priorities and ways in which the valuable network of producers established during this first phase of the project can be consolidated and expanded.
“There is a desire within industry to build on the good work which Leading Sheep has achieved, therefore the Project Advisory Panel is very pleased the bid has been successful,” Ms Mills said.
“The current partners have expressed a willingness to see Leading Sheep continue, albeit in a more streamlined and economical way now that the network is established.
“There has been significant commitment displayed at all levels of the project which has Leading Sheep presenting as a model for achieving cooperation, teamwork, and successful outcomes.”
Each of the four Queensland sheep regions – Central West, South West, Southern Inland, and South East – has a regional committee of producers which sets objectives and determines what information is considered most beneficial for local enterprises.
“Each region has a coordinator and a DPI&F extension officer providing technical expertise, with the committees identifying and implementing chosen activities such as training, workshops, field days, on-property demonstrations and information forums.
The project has pursued innovative information transfer methods, including the use of teleworkshops, visual presentations via a web-based facility, e-books and a designated website (www.leadingsheep.com.au) with electronic database and calendar of activities.
Some proposed objectives for the second round of Leading Sheep are: engaging youth, enhancing communication opportunities and interpersonal skills, and understanding key profit drivers.
